DC medical examiner’s office rules January death a homicide

WASHINGTON — The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in D.C. ruled that a man found dead in Northeast D.C. in January was killed by blunt force trauma.

In a news release from D.C. police, the Chief Medical Examiner ruled the cause of death for 70-year-old Willie Sawyer as homicide.

Officers responded to reports of an unconscious person in the 5000 block of Nannie Helen Burroughs, NE at around 3:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 25.

When they arrived on the scene, officers found Sawyer unconscious and unresponsive. When D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded, they found no signs of life and transported him to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The medical examiner’s office made its ruling on Friday, March 9.
