Arrest made in shooting death of boy outside DC church

WASHINGTON — A 21-year-old man has been arrested in the death of 14-year-old Steven Slaughter, who was fatally shot outside a church in Southeast D.C. in January.

D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham announced Monday the arrest of Anthony Deandre Allen, of Southeast D.C. He’s charged with first-degree murder while armed.

Officers were called on Jan. 14, a little before 7 p.m., to the 1700 block of Minnesota Avenue Southeast for reports of a shooting.

They found Slaughter, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, lying in front of the Garden Memorial Presbyterian Church. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Slaughter had been walking home from a store with friends. He was shot about a block from his home in what police are calling a robbery attempt.

Slaughter was in the ninth grade at Friendship Collegiate Academy.

“Steven was described as an outstanding young guy with a world of promise,” Newsham said at a news conference Monday.

Following the incident, detectives identified a vehicle of interest in the case that had been stolen in an armed carjacking about a week before.

The vehicle was found and the murder weapon was recovered from it. That information led police to the suspect, Newsham said.
