Man who fled to Georgia after Northeast DC shooting pleads guilty

WASHINGTON — A D.C. man has pleaded guilty Monday to a felony charge in connection to a June shooting in Northeast D.C.

Deangelo Paris Belton, 23, pleaded guilty in D.C. Superior Court to one count of aggravated assault while armed, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office for the District of Columbia.

The shooting took place around 6:20 p.m. on June 12 near the intersection of Minnesota and Nannie Helen Burroughs avenues in Northeast, officials said. Belton and the victim knew each other. While the victim was walking near the intersection that evening, he passed Belton and two other men.

“Belton and the victim briefly exchanged words about whether Belton was still mad at the victim for a fistfight they had several months earlier,” officials said in the statement.

It was during this exchange that Belton pulled out a handgun and shot at the victim several times before leaving the scene, officials said. Belton fled to Georgia, but was later captured by U.S. Marshals Service. He was returned to D.C. in August to face charges, officials said.

The victim had multiple gunshot wounds to his abdomen and waist. Officials said after surgery and hospitalization, he required ongoing rehabilitation and treatment.

Belton’s plea is subject to the court’s approval. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 15.
