Firefighter injured in Northwest DC fire

WASHINGTON — A firefighter was injured Sunday morning as crews battled a fire in the Columbia Heights neighborhood in Northwest D.C., officials said.

Firefighters were called to the 1300 block of Park Road at around 3:30 a.m. Investigators said the fire started in a basement restaurant, El Riconcito, inside a three-story rowhouse.

“We were able to get to it and extinguish [the fire] before it spread to the upper floor,” said Vito Maggiolo, a spokesman for D.C. Fire and EMS.

Maggiolo said the fire was deemed accidental and electrical in origin.

“The fire did cause extensive damage to the basement portion,” Maggiolo said.

The injured firefighter was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
