Major D.C. roads to close for 17-mile bike ride

WASHINGTON — D.C. drivers may need to seek alternative routes during the inaugural 17-mile D.C. Bike Ride on Sunday.

The noncompetitive ride, which begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m., will lead as many as 8,000 participants through some of D.C.’s main streets, passing monuments and other city landmarks. Road closures will begin at 6:30 a.m., and streets will reopen on a rolling basis. See below for a full list of road closures.

Additionally, the bike ride will affect some Metrobus lines. Metrorail will run on a normal Sunday schedule.

The course will begin at the U.S. Capitol and lead riders around the National Mall, go around Georgetown via the Whitehurst Freeway, cross the 14th Street Bridge and loop back at the Pentagon. It will culminate with a festival on Constitution Avenue NW near the U.S. Capitol.

The festival will feature food trucks, drinks and musical performances by White Ford Bronco, DJ Questlove and others. The festival will begin at 9 a.m. and end at 1 p.m.

The event comes from Capital Sport Ventures, with founding sponsors Events D.C., CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, and Washington Area Bicyclist Association.

The following roads will be closed from 7 to 9 a.m.:

  • First Street NW from Pennsylvania Ave. NW to Maryland Ave. SW
  • Maryland Ave. SW from First Street NW to Third Street SW

The following roads will be closed from 7 a.m. to noon:

  • Third Street SW from Maryland Ave. SW to Pennsylvania Ave. SW
  • Independence Ave. SW from 7th Street SW to Third Street SW
  • 7th Street SW (southbound only) from Independence Ave. SW to Maine Ave. SW

The following roads will be closed from 7 to 11:45 a.m.:

  • Maine Ave. SW (westbound only) from the Interstate 395 exit ramp to 7th Street SW
  • 14th Street NW (southbound only) from Constitution Ave. NW to the 14th Street Bridge

The following road will be closed from 8 to 11:45: a.m.:

  • The Interstate 395 HOV lanes (southbound only) from the 14th Street Bridge to the S. Eads Street exit

The following roads will be closed from 7 to 10:30 a.m.:

  • Constitution Ave. NW from 14th Street NW to 18th Street NW
  • 18th Street NW from E Street NW to Constitution Ave.
  • Virginia Ave. from E Street NW to Constitution Ave.
  • E Street NW (eastbound only) from 18th Street NW to the Potomac River Freeway

The following road will be closed from 7 to 10:20 a.m.:

  • The Potomac Freeway from Rock Creek Parkway (horseshoe turn) to Whitehurst Freeway

The following road will be closed from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m.:

  • Whitehurst Freeway (westbound) from Potomac Freeway to Canal Road NW

The following road will be close from 7:15 to 10:30 a.m.:

  • Whitehurst Freeway (eastbound) from Potomac Freeway/K Street to the Key Bridge exit
