WASHINGTON — Monthslong lane closures that will tie up traffic along Interstate 395 begin Monday night.
The closures are needed to make way for construction work that will extend the 3rd Street Tunnel and make room for the Capitol Crossing development.
“This phase of work will continue until around January of 2016,” said Muhammed Khali, chief engineer for the District Department of Transportation. “We will be monitoring the traffic condition and if it needs to be adjusted we will look into that.”
During the early afternoon, late evening and overnight hours, I-395 will be down to one lane in each direction. There are no lane closures expected during peak travel times.
Drivers are urged to plan ahead and to consider alternate routes.
Construction crews are working to connect the city grid above the interstate by extending the 3rd Street Tunnel. The project is bordered by Massachusetts Avenue to the north, E Street to the south, Third Street to the west and Second Street to the east.
