WASHINGTON — A U.S. Park Police officer fatally shot his wife and then himself Thursday evening, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies responded just after 8 p.m. to a call in the Hunters Brook neighborhood of Indian Head, Maryland, and found both Jose Bumbray, 46, and wife Brenda Jenette Harrison-Bumbray, 50, suffering from gunshot wounds inside their home.

Their son, said to be in his 20s, had called the authorities after hearing a quarrel followed by gunfire.

Brenda Bumbray was pronounced dead at the scene; Jose Bumbray was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The officer apparently used his service weapon in the shooting, said investigators with the sheriff’s office. Ballistics testing will be conducted.

U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. James Dingledein confirmed Friday that Bumbray had been with the department since 2002.

Anyone with additional information is asked to call the sheriff’s office at 301-609-6515.
