Kings Dominion debuts new ride

WASHINGTON — Kings Dominion opens for its 2016 season Friday with a new ride to delight thrill seekers.

Called “Delirium,” the giant ring spins riders around in a vertical circle that tops out at 115 feet.

Here’s how Kings Dominion describes it:

Delirium is a powerful, spinning pendulum on which 40 riders are strapped into their seats, facing outward on a giant ring. As their feet dangle, they begin slowly swinging back and forth while the ring starts to rotate. The ride quickly gains momentum and before they know it, riders are getting swirling views of the park. On Delirium, guests soar to a height of 115 feet at a maximum arc angle of 120 degrees.

Construction on the ride started last fall. The ride sits in the park’s Candy Apple Grove section, which also got some other upgrades for the new season.

Kings Dominion, in Doswell, Virginia, offers about 60 rides and attractions for thrill seekers.

This will be Kings Dominion’s 42nd season.

The park is owned by Ohio-based Cedar Fair Entertainment Company (NYSE: FUN), which operates several other parks across the country, including Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, and the company’s flagship park, Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.
