Montgomery Co. woman wins Dominica’s first Olympic medal

In March, triple jumper Thea LaFond was the only representative of her tiny Caribbean nation, Dominica, at world indoors. She won the gold medal. Now at the Paris Olympics, LaFond is the only woman from her country competing in track and field. Again, she won gold. Only it was more than gold. It was the very first Olympic medal for Dominica. LaFond left Dominica for the United States when she was 5 and now lives in Maryland. But she’s still ambassador for her birth nation.

Torri Huske claims a starring role for U.S. team at Paris Olympics

Katie Ledecky swims into history with 800 freestyle victory at the Paris Olympics

Katie Ledecky has capped another stellar Olympics by becoming only the second swimmer to win the same event at four straight Summer Games, holding off Ariarne Titmus to win the 800-meter freestyle. It was Ledecky’s second gold medal in Paris and ninth of her remarkable career, which marked another milestone.

Sha’Carri Richardson overcomes sluggish start to make 100-meter final at Paris Olympics

Sha’Carri Richardson overcame a slow start Saturday to qualify for the Olympic 100-meter final later that night despite finishing second to Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia. In a race featuring the two fastest Olympians in the field this year, Alfred finished in 10.84 seconds, a full body length and .05 seconds ahead of the reigning world champion.

US rolls into Olympic quarterfinals as No. 1 seed, top Puerto Rico 104-83 in group finale

Halfway to its goal of gold, the U.S. has the No. 1 seed going into the medal round at the Paris Olympics. And now the real games start. Anthony Edwards scored 26 points, six players reached double figures for the U.S. and the Americans wrapped up the top spot coming out of group play by rolling past Puerto Rico 104-83 on Saturday.

Washington Spirit’s Trinity Rodman scores as US women’s soccer team beats Japan 1-0 after extra time to reach Olympic SF

Washington Spirit’s Trinity Rodman scored in extra time and the United States advanced to the women’s soccer semifinals at the Olympics with a 1-0 victory over Japan. The U.S. will face the winner of the later match between Germany and Canada in Marseille. The U.S. beat Germany 4-1 in the group stage. Rodman’s goal to the top of the far post came as time in stoppage time in the first extra period. She fell to the field as she was embraced by her teammates in celebration.

Simone Biles captures her seventh Olympic gold medal by winning women’s vault for a second time

Simone Biles earned her seventh Olympic gold medal, soaring to victory in the women’s vault final. The 27-year-old Biles averaged 15.300 for her signature Yurchenko double pike and Cheng vaults to claim a second gold on the event eight years after she triumphed in Rio de Janeiro. Biles now has 10 Olympic medals in her career, seven of them gold.

5-time BMX world champ Hannah Roberts of US crashes out as Perris Benegas takes home silver

Five-time BMX world champion Hannah Roberts wound up crashing on a front flip late in her first run Wednesday, and was only seconds into her second when she put her foot down on the landing. That left the heavy favorite out of the medals entirely, and left China’s Deng Yawen on the top step of the podium along with silver medalist Perris Benegas of the U.S. and bronze medalist Natalya Diehm of Australia.

Simone Biles makes history with second all-around Olympic gymnastics title
