BALTIMORE (AP) — A Maryland man has been exonerated of murder and set free after spending 30 years in prison.
Jerome Johnson, 50, was released Monday, news outlets report. He had been convicted of participating in the July 1988 shooting of a man at a Baltimore liquor store.
The case was reviewed by defense attorney Nancy Forster, the Baltimore State’s Attorney’s Office and the nonprofit Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project. The review uncovered issues including Maryland’s failure to disclose evidence and police not confirming a witness’s identification of Johnson.
The state’s attorney’s office asked a judge Monday to vacate the charge. City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby apologized to Johnson on behalf of the justice system following his release.
Johnson is at least the third man to be exonerated during Mosby’s nearly three years in office.
