Disabled vehicle spurs HAZMAT investigation, leads to meth arrests on I-66

WASHINGTON — A traffic stop along Interstate 66 near Rosslyn Tunnel nearly triggered a HAZMAT situation and resulted in two drugs arrests on Saturday, police said.

The incident happened at around 7 a.m., when Virginia State Police approached a disabled SUV on the side of the highway and noticed a suspicious liquid inside.

The substance was initially determined to be fuel, but traffic on westbound travel lanes were blocked as a HAZMAT crew investigated, according to Ashley Savage, a spokeswoman for Arlington police.

Police said two people were taken into custody after methamphetamine was found, Savage said.

The owner of the vehicle was released.
