2 in custody after chase near Va. mall

WASHINGTON — Two people are in police custody after a police chase that started as a road rage incident near the Pentagon City Mall Friday afternoon.

There were reports of a shooting in the mall’s parking garage near 15th and Hayes streets at about 3:10 p.m., which stemmed from a road rage incident, says Lt. Kip Malcolm with the Arlington County Police Department.

Witnesses told police a passenger in a car fired a warning shot after some sort of incident involving two cars.

When Arlington County police arrived, they chased a car fleeing the mall, Malcolm says.

The chase led into D.C. and on northbound Interstate 395, the suspects threw a gun out the window, says Malcolm.

Police arrested two people involved in the chase and recovered the weapon.

It’s still not clear if anyone was hurt.

The police investigation caused northbound I-395, also known as the 3rd Street Tunnel, to be diverted onto Massachusetts Avenue (exit 10). The tunnel reopened about two hours later.
