WASHINGTON — The replacement and widening of a 74-year-old bridge will affect traffic in Arlington, Virginia for years.

Starting Monday, April 27, travel lanes will drop from three to two in each direction of Washington Boulevard over Jefferson Davis Highway.

“We’re advising drivers to expect delays and use alternate routes if possible, particularly northbound during the morning rush hour,” says Mike Murphy, a spokesman with the Virginia Department of Transportation.

VDOT says the work could add 10 minutes to the commute.

The latest data show more than 70,000 vehicles use Washington Boulevard on a daily basis.

The project is scheduled to be finished in May 2018.
