Police: Van fatally strikes 12-year-old, Md. driver arrested

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — The driver of a van that ran off a road and fatally injured a 12-year-old boy has been arrested.

Thirty-seven-year-old Michael Blair Gauthier, of Arnold, Maryland, is charged with criminally negligent manslaughter and possession of a controlled dangerous substance.

News outlets cite an Anne Arundel County Police news release that says 12-year-old Matthew Murphy was walking with his mother and brother Sunday afternoon when he was struck. The van veered off the roadway and struck the boy just outside of Annapolis. Murphy was flown to a hospital where he later died. WTOP reports that police say reckless driving and failing to remain in a single lane may be the cause of the crash.

The results of Gauthier’s toxicology screening are pending.
