Metro committee recommends new names for 2 D.C. stations

WASHINGTON – A Metro board committee recommends changing the names of two D.C. stations.

The committee voted Thursday morning to recommend the names changes to the full board despite advice from staff to reject the name change for the Foggy Bottom Station.

EARLIER:

WASHINGTON — A Metro board committee will take up suggestions for name changes for two D.C. stations on Thursday.

The District Department of Transportation asked Metro to change the name of the Smithsonian Station to include the secondary name “National Mall,” and to change the Foggy Bottom-GWU name to include the secondary name “Kennedy Center.”

Based on feedback from riders and Metro policy considerations, Metro staff recommend the board approve the change for Smithsonian but reject the change for Foggy Bottom.

Metro has until the end of April to make any changes to station names that could be rolled out with the initial signs showing the second phase of the Silver Line to Dulles International Airport and Loudoun County.

Changes by April 30 will allow Metro to meet deadlines for new maps and signs to avoid any financial penalties or other additional costs.
