WASHINGTON — Federal and local government offices, schools, libraries and post offices are all closed on Monday, Sept. 5 for Labor Day. Most banks are also closed on this holiday. Liquor stores remain open in Virginia, but are open by the owner’s choice in D.C. and Maryland.
Here are some other service changes to remember on this extended weekend.
Transit service
Metrorail
Trains run on a Sunday schedule, opening at 7 a.m. and closing at midnight with off-peak fares all day. but keep in mind of scheduled work for Red, Orange, Blue and Silver lines. Visit their website for specific station closures.
Metrobus
Buses run on a Sunday schedule.
Virginia Railway Express
No service on Labor Day. Regular service returns Tuesday, Sept. 6.
MARC Train
No service on Labor Day.
Driving
When navigating the roadways on Labor Day, remember that the HOV and reversible lane restrictions are not in effect in Virginia or D.C., but are still observed in Maryland.
Trash collection
DC
Trash won’t be collected on Labor Day. You’ll have to wait until Tuesday.
Maryland
Anne Arundel, Frederick, Howard, Montgomery and Prince George’s counties do not have trash pickups on Labor Day.
Virginia
Counties continue with regular collection. Alexandria slides trash pickup to Tuesday.
Parking
- Parking meters do not have to be paid in D.C., with the exception of areas around National Park and along the D. C. Streetcar route.
- No need to feed the meters in Montgomery County, Maryland. Parking will also be free in parts of Prince George’s County.
- Parking meters do not require payment in Alexandria, Virginia, and residential parking permits are not time limited. Arlington, Virginia will also have free parking.
