Howard Co. police seek person who shot at speed camera van

WASHINGTON — Police are searching for the person who shot at a speed camera van in Howard County Monday.

Police say someone shot a pellet or BB gun at a speed camera van parked in the 5000 block of Ilchester Road near Landing Road in Ellicott City, Maryland, around 4 p.m. Monday.

The rear window was damaged and an employee was working inside the van at the time, police say.

Police say the shots may have been fired from a Jeep.

Monday’s incident isn’t the first time someone has damaged a speed camera in the county. Police have already arrested and charged four other people for destruction of a speed camera van or speed camera equipment in a nearly three-year period.

“We want people to know that we take these cases very seriously and will file criminal charges,” Police Chief Gary Gardner said in a news release. “Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about the speed camera program, but we cannot overlook the significant damage to equipment and potential injury to our van operators.”

In all cases, the suspects were found guilty and some were required to pay fines of up to $15,000 and/or serve time in jail.

Anyone with information about Monday’s incident should call Howard County Police at 410-313-3200.
