WASHINGTON — Police searched Wednesday evening for a single gunman involved in a quadruple shooting near a busy D.C. intersection.

A gunman approached a group of people outside Big Ben Liquor Store near the intersection of North Capitol Street and New York Avenue in D.C. at about 4:20 p.m. and opened fire. The gunman, who appears to have targeted at least one of the victims, shot four people, said D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier.

The targeted victim was shot multiple times and is in stable condition at an area hospital. The other three victims were struck on their lower extremities and are at the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Lanier said.

Police are searching for the gunman, who fled the scene after the shooting. He is described as a 5-foot-6 black man with a medium complexion who wore a black mask, dark-colored pants and a black jacket at the time of the crime. Police updated an earlier description that said the suspect wore all black.

Police tweeted a photo of the suspect:

A police officer on a bike was responding to the scene when he was struck by a vehicle, Lanier said. The officer was a block away from the scene when he heard gunshots and moved to respond when a car hit him. The officer’s injuries are not serious.

The incident and its investigation caused traffic delays for evening rush hour drivers in the area.
