D.C. mayor’s biggest storm concern is power outages

WASHINGTON — D.C. is gearing up for potential blizzard conditions in the coming days, and Mayor Muriel Bowser says her biggest concern is heavy snow and wind knocking out power.

“We will work with the power company to make sure people are restored just as soon as possible,” Bowser said during a news conference Wednesday.

In the event of outages, Bowser urged everyone across the city to check on others in their community to make sure they are all right.

“It’s more than just a nicety to look in on a neighbor, it becomes a necessity,” she said.

The city has recruited 2,000 volunteers to check on vulnerable residents and to help them prepare for and clear the snow.

D.C.’s Department of Public Works plans to release information about its snow-clearing strategy Thursday morning ahead of the storm.

Meanwhile, Bowser reminded property owners that they have a duty as well.

“It is important that we clear sidewalks,” she said. “That is your responsibility and it’s required by the law.”
