Redskins clean house of defensive coaches

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story stated that the entire defensive staff had been fired, but the team has announced two will remain on staff.

WASHINGTON — The Washington Redskins fired defensive coordinator Joe Barry and three other defensive coaching staff members the team announced Thursday.

In addition to Barry, defensive line coach Rob Akey, defensive backs coach Perry Fewell and strength coach Mike Clark have also been released. Linebackers coach Greg Manusky and inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti remain on the staff for now.

Washington ranked 28th in yards per game allowed (377.9) and penalty yardage (1,023), and dead last in first downs per game allowed (23) and defensive third down percentage (47 percent).

There has been no official announcement from the team about any potential replacements at this time.
