If you live in D.C. and earn at least $100,001, you are definitely not alone.
In 2019, it appears for the first time ever in the District, the number of personal income tax filers who reported earning $100,001 or more topped any other income subset, according to the recently released Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, a detailed accounting of D.C.’s finances. Of the city’s 354,901 total filers, 87,759 reported earning at least six figures plus $1, or 24.73% of the total.
Their personal income tax liability of $1.6 billion last year represented 80% of the District’s $2.04 billion total liability, per the CAFR.
The second-largest subset of filers, 81,760, earned between $25,001 and $50,000 in 2019 but represented only 4.57% of D.C.’s total personal income tax liability. Of the remaining subsets, there were:
56,748 filers who earned between $10,001 and $25,000
56,462 who earned between $50,001 and $75,000
37,104 who earned $10,000 or less
35,068 who earned between $75,001 and $100,000
