Shoppers employees notified of another closure, this one in Montgomery County

Shoppers will close another location come January, this one at White Flint Plaza in Kensington, Maryland, according to the union that represents employees at Shoppers stores.

Shoppers, which is owned by Providence, Rhode Island’s United Natural Foods Inc., informed the store’s employees Thursday that the White Flint store will close Jan. 16.

The store employs 54 employees with an average of 15 years of experience, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 said in a statement.

The store at 5110 Nicholson Lane is the latest in a string of closures and sales of Shoppers locations as UNFI works to get out of the retail grocery business. It said Dec. 6 that it would close 17 stores, with 13 of them being sold to other grocery operators.

The union will host a resource fair Jan. 11 to provide financial assistance, community support and help with job training and placement for the affected employees.
