WASHINGTON — Crowds have gathered at the Virginia Capitol ahead of Ralph Northam’s inauguration as the state’s 73rd governor.

Northam has promised to “unite” both parties in the General Assembly and push a bipartisan agenda in 2018’s legislative session.

His election was widely considered a repudiation of President Donald Trump’s administration. Democrats swept all three Virginia races including lieutenant governor and attorney general with help from vote-rich Northern Virginia, where Northam won by large margins.
