Man charged in deadly gas station attack

WASHINGTON — A man has been charged in the killing of a gas station clerk in Virginia early Saturday morning.

The attack happened at around 1:30 a.m. at the Sunoco gas station on Jefferson Davis Highway, near Interstate 95.

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office said David Washington, 50, was identified on security footage hanging around the store, chatting with the Saleh Yousef Abukhait, 54, for a few minutes before pulling out a two-by-two and attacking the clerk.

The sheriff’s office said Washington took cash from the register and fled.

Several minutes later, a patron found the Abukhait lying on the ground. Emergency responders at the scene determined  that Abukhait was dead.

Washington was apprehended without incident at Dunning Mills apartments in Fredericksburg, Virginia later Saturday.

The sheriff’s office said Sunday that Washington was being charged with first-degree murder, robbery and grand larceny.

He was ordered held without bail at Rappahannock Regional Jail.
