RICHMOND, Va. — Virginians are registering to vote at a faster rate than they have in previous years.
The Virginia Department of Elections says 383, 670 Virginians have registered to vote so far this year.
“We’ve had a lot of people updating their address and making sure their information is current and up-to-date,” Edgardo Cortés, commissioner of the Virginia Department of Elections, tells WTOP.
Cortés said the increase in registration is being seen all over the state.
Roughly a third of those signing up in October.
A record 5.6 million Virginians are registered to vote ahead of Election Day.
“The numbers this year certainly are higher than they’ve ever been,” Cortés said.
Virginia’s last peak in voter registration was 5.4 million during the last presidential election.
