Professor gives $2M to U.Va. to expand Center for Politics

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — The University of Virginia is set to receive a $2 million gift from politics professor Larry Sabato to launch a $30 million expansion of the Center for Politics.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/2cqLU7n) reports that Sabato, the center’s founding director, said Tuesday that the funding initiative will be aimed toward building an additional facility next to the 18-year-old center’s current home at an estimated cost of $12 million.

Sabato, who is known for his Crystal Ball political predictions online newsletter, says the money will also be used to help support U.Va. students in internships with elected officials as well as to provide endowments to support educational programs that further the center’s mission of civic education and participation.
