Dead bat found in packaged salad sparks limited recall

WASHINGTON — Fresh Express has issued a recall of some Organic Marketside Spring Mix salad cases after two people reportedly discovered a dead bat inside a salad package purchased in Florida.

The people who found the bat said they had eaten some of the salad before they noticed the dead animal.

While transmission of rabies by eating a rabid animal is uncommon, the two people were recommended to undergo post-exposure rabies treatment. Neither showed signs of the disease.

The bat was sent to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention rabies lab for testing.

The CDC is investigating the case and recalling a limited number of salad cases.

The recall applies to salads distributed in Wal-Mart stores located in the southeastern United States. Packages have the production code G089B19 and best-if-used-by date of April 14, 2017.

Consumers of the product can get a full refund by calling the Fresh Express Consumer Response Center at 1-800-242-5472 between 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
