MorningStar recalls 2 black bean burger products

WASHINGTON — MorningStar Farms is voluntarily recalling two of its black bean burger products as a precaution due to an undeclared peanut allergen in both.

The vegetarian frozen patty company, which is a division of the Kellogg Co., also issued an allergy alert for its Spicy Black Bean and Chipotle Black Bean burgers in the U.S.

MorningStar was notified by a third party supplier that one of the spice ingredients used in both burgers may inadvertently contain peanuts, an allergen that is not declared on the products’ ingredient statements.

People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to peanuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products.

Both the Giant and Stop & Shop grocery chains have removed the product from stores.

This recall affects the following products:

  • MorningStar Farms Spicy Black Bean Burgers, 18.9 oz., UPC 2898971750, with a Better if Used Before Date of APR14 16 – JUN30 16
  • MorningStar Farms Spicy Black Bean Burgers, 9.5 oz., UPC 2898939207, with a Better if Used Before Date of APR14 16 – JUN30 16

Consumers looking for additional information on the recall may call Morningstar Farms at 800-962-0120, Giant at 1-888-814-4268 or Stop and Shop at 800-767-7772.
