Driver arrested after Va. death involving mattress on top of van

WASHINGTON — A driver has been charged in connection with last week’s death of a young woman who had been riding on a mattress perched on top of Chevrolet Express van.

Prince William County police say the mattress was not secured to the van, and the mattress fell off the van’s roof in Haymarket.

The woman, 20-year-old Sindy Zelaya Gonzalez of Culpeper, was killed.

It happened at 6:42 a.m. Friday along Waverly Farm Drive just south of Bent Grass Drive.

Now the driver, 41-year-old Norma Guadron Canales of Culpeper, has been charged with reckless driving and driving without a license.

She turned herself in Tuesday and has been released on a $5,000 bond.

The next scheduled court date for Canales is Oct. 15.

Police say the women were not trying to pull off some kind of stunt, but instead were trying to move the mattress a short distance.
