WASHINGTON — An armed robbery suspect shot by Prince George’s County police Monday has improved to stable condition, and the officer who fired the shot has been identified.
Prince George’s County police said officers were forcing open a bedroom door inside a Greenbelt, Maryland, apartment when there “there was a confrontation” between the officer, Cpl. James Dwyer, and 26-year-old Corey Janifer.
Dwyer, a 19-year veteran of the department who had been assigned to the fugitive task force for the past two years, fired one shot, which struck Janifer in the abdomen, police said.
Janifer was taken to the hospital and initially listed in critical condition.
The officer has been placed on administrative duty while the shooting is investigated, which is standard practice.
No officers were injured, and the department said officers immediately rendered emergency medical aid to Janifer after the officer shot him.
Police said Janifer is suspected in an April 8 home invasion on Rhode Island Avenue in Northwest D.C. in which one man was shot in the leg. Prince George’s County police were helping D.C. police serve an arrest warrant for armed robbery at the time Janifer was shot.
