One dead after hotel fire in Capitol Heights

WASHINGTON — One person was found dead in a hotel room where a fire broke out on Thursday morning in Capitol Heights, Maryland.

Firefighters were first alerted by a private alarm company and subsequent 911 calls of smoke on the top floor of the LaQuinta Inn on Hampton Park Boulevard, said Mark Brady, a spokesman for the Prince George’s County Fire Department.

Brady said the fire was contained by the sprinkler system in the building and once firefighters arrived they were able to completely put the fire out.

“Upon further investigation, firefighters found the deceased body of an adult,” Brady said. “An investigation has now started into the cause of the fire and the identity of the person. We’ll need to do an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, but that investigation is ongoing.”

Brady said no one else was injured in the fire, the damage to the room was minimal.
