Police: Man posed as officer then assaulted, robbed driver

CLINTON, Md. (AP) — Police in Prince George’s County are looking for a man who they say pretended to be a police officer and assaulted and robbed a driver.

The incident happened Tuesday morning. Police say a man in a white Ford flashed blue and red lights at another driver, who then pulled over.

That’s when police say the man posing as an officer pulled the victim out of his car and assaulted him before taking his wallet.

Police say the suspect was wearing a blue jacket with patches on each sleeve, blue pants and a silver chain with what appeared to be a badge hanging from it.

Officials say this is an isolated incident and the first of its type reported in the county this year. Authorities are asking anyone with information to call 1-866-411-8477.

If motorists don’t feel a traffic stop is legitimate, they should call 911 to verify they are being pulled over by an actual officer,  Cpl. Harry Bond, a Prince George’s County police spokesman, told WTOP.

“If it is a marked cruiser then it’s a good chance that it’s a police officer,” Bond said.  “If it’s an unmarked cruiser with no police agency written on it anywhere, then you have that right to do just a little more digging — respectfully of course.”

WTOP’s Dennis Foley contributed to this report.
