WASHINGTON — A police officer shot and wounded a person under active surveillance in Capitol Heights, Maryland, Thursday night, Prince George’s County police said.
The shooting took place just before 10 p.m. Thursday in the 7400 block of Shady Glen Terrace. Before the shooting, uniformed officers in a marked car attempted to stop the driver of a vehicle who they believe is linked to a “series of violent crimes,” police Chief Hank Stawinski said at a 12:30 a.m. press briefing.
The driver did not stop and drove a short distance before getting out of the car, armed with a handgun with an extended magazine.

He ran off and an officer pursued him. It is unclear whether the suspect fired his gun, police said after a preliminary investigation, but the officer shot several times, hitting the suspect once in the arm.
The suspect was taken to the hospital, but police said he had non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured. The officer involved did not wear a body camera but Stawinski said there was in-car camera footage.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative duty.
