Woman found dead along trail in Hyattsville

HYATTSVILLE, Md. (AP) — Prince George’s County police are investigating after a woman was found dead along a hiking trail in Hyattsville.

Police said Catherine Alvarado, 20, of Hyattsville was found dead on New Year’s Day along the Northwest Branch Trail, near Rosa Parks Elementary School.

On Saturday, police identified Alvarado as the victim  and said her death does not appear to be a random act. Police say she had trauma to her upper body.

She didn’t live far from where her body was found.

“It’s really concerning, mainly because I have kids and the fact that it happened on a trail where … you see nothing but women and babies and kids walking all the time,” says Diana Sanchez, 28, a mom who lives in the neighborhood.

Antoine Green, who also lives in the community, said he would like to security measures stepped up.

“It’s very concerning especially since those trails are what the kids take to go to school, so that’s very concerning for the kids, their safety,” says Green, 28.

Police are offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest and indictment in the case.
