Police: Ex-boyfriend broke into woman’s house before fatal stabbing

WASHINGTON — Prince George’s County police say a woman’s ex-boyfriend broke into her house earlier this week and waited for her to return before killing her.

Officers say 56-year-old Amanda Jones was found stabbed to death in her house along the 900 block of Andean Goose Way in Upper Marlboro Tuesday morning.

On Thursday, police released charging documents that say her ex-boyfriend, 56-year-old Mitchell Jerome Cole of White Plains, admitted to police that he broke into her house at about 8:30 p.m. Monday and waited nearly 40 minutes for Jones to return home before stabbing her to death.

Jones pulled her car into her garage at about 9:15 p.m. She was on the phone with a friend who heard a struggle before the call cut off.

The friend called police and when they arrived at the house, they say they weren’t able to make contact and cleared the scene.

The next morning, Jones’ daughter went to the home and found her mother’s body on the basement floor covered in blood. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives are still working to determine the weapon used in the homicide.

Police said Thursday that Jones had been killed about 25 minutes before her friend called police expressing concern about her well-being on Monday night.

Police arrested and charged Cole with her death on Wednesday. Cole voluntarily went to the police for an interview, waived his Miranda rights and confessed to the murder, according to charging documents.

He is being held at the Department of Corrections in Upper Marlboro.
