Pipe collapse affects New Carrollton Metro station riders

WASHINGTON — A pipe collapse caused a road closure in Prince George’s County on Sunday and may take several months to repair.

The MD 950 ramp to westbound US 50 is closed due to the collapse that was caused by heavy rains, according to a State Highway Administration news release.

“As a result of ongoing inspections, SHA today also will close the ramp from Garden City Drive to eastbound US 50 and detour traffic until permanent repairs can be made,” the release states. “These detours will impact Metro riders using the New Carrollton Metro station. ”

SHA is working on a plan to repair the 12-foot diameter pipe that carries the Beaverdam Creek five feet below the roadway. However, they say repairs could take several months.

Drivers are encouraged to detour onto Corporate and Pennsy drives.
