Oh, baby: Top 10 newborn names of 2017 released

WASHINGTON — Orwellian though the truth is, the government is “with us from day one,” as the Social Security Administration says.

That means they’re the ones who keep track of American newborns — and their names — and they released the list of 2017’s top baby names Friday.

Here are the lists:

Top 10 baby girl names of 2017

1. Emma
2. Olivia
3. Ava
4. Isabella
5. Sophia
6. Mia
7. Charlotte
8. Amelia
9. Evelyn
10. Abigail

Top 10 baby boy names of 2017

1. Liam
2. Noah
3. William
4. James
5. Logan
6. Benjamin
7. Mason
8. Elijah
9. Oliver
10. Jacob

The department determines the most popular names based on requests for Social Security numbers.

According to the administration, the top 10 names helps reflect cultural shifts stemming from the prior year.

The government office did not say whether or not “Logan” made the top 10 due to Hugh Jackman’s fantastic, and presumably final, turn as an older, somehow more grizzled Wolverine.

There is a searchable database of popular baby names on the Social Security Administration’s website.
