Black Monday: Which NFL coaches got the ax

WASHINGTON — Black Monday.

It is the day after the end of the NFL regular season when teams around the league make changes by firing coaches and general managers.

Some teams wasted no time in giving their coaches the heave-ho, others are still waiting to see if the ax falls.

As coaches, coordinators and GMs around the league work to update their resumes, here is a list of those who will be looking for a new job in 2018.

The New York Giants didn’t even wait for the end of the season to get rid of their head coach. Some people had the Giants as a sleeper pick for the Super Bowl coming off an 11-5 season last year, but things never quite clicked for the Giants who started the season 0-5 and finished with an abysmal 3-13 record. The organization decided to clean house in December firing head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese after a week 13 loss to the Oakland Raiders, bringing their record to 2-10. This season was the first time the Giants made a midseason coaching change since 1976 when they finished 3-11. McAdoo had a 13-15 record as head coach with the Giants over the course of two seasons. Just two hours after beating the Houston Texans in their week 17 finale, the Indianapolis Colts fired head coach Chuck Pagano on Sunday. The Colts have missed the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, the first time that has happened since a seven season playoff drought from 1998 to 1994. Pagano finished with a 53-43 record over the course of six seasons with the Colts, though he missed 12 games in 2012, his first year as head coach, due to cancer treatments. Oakland Raiders head coach Jack Del Rio became the third, and arguably most surprising, coaching casualty shortly after their 30-10 loss to the Los Angeles Charges that capped a disappointing 6-10 season. Del Rio had just signed a four-year contract extension last February after 12 win season resulted in the Raiders first playoff appearance in 13 years. ESPN has reported that the Raiders expect to name current ESPN analyst Jon Gruden as their new head coach. Gruden previously coached the Raiders for four seasons. Despite a 9-7 record, the Detroit Lions fired head coach Jim Caldwell after the team missed the playoffs for the second time in three years. Caldwell led the Lions to two of their three playoff appearances in the 21st century, but the team has still not won a playoff game since 1992. After three straight losing seasons, the Chicago Bears parted ways with head coach John Fox. Fox came to the Bears after leading the Denver Broncos to four straight AFC West titles, but the Bears lost at least ten games every year during his tenure as head coach. His .292 winning percentage is the second worst in the history of the Bears franchise. His firing means the Bears will have gone through three head coaches in the span of six seasons.
