Viewpoint: D.C.-area business communities of color must unite amid Supreme Court affirmative action decision

Two days before the birthday of the nation’s first Black Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall (1967-1998), the Supreme Court rendered one of its most damaging decisions. The decision to eliminate race as a consideration in college admissions will turn back the clock at least 50 years.  

College admission and abortion are the headliners today, but inclusive business programs will soon be the target. The result will impact the economy now and in the future. Given what has happened historically, minority businesses must brace themselves for the anticipated tsunami of such a decision on race-conscious programs nationwide.

Historically, debates over affirmative action have concentrated on the relative success of minorities in three areas: employment, education and economics. Of the three, minority business economics is perhaps the least focused on, despite its importance for economic progress and success.
