Sara DeWitt is leading PBS Kids to help young viewers cope with Covid’s uncertainty

When the Covid-19 pandemic shut down schools and child care, many parents found themselves suddenly more flexible on the idea of screen time.

Sara DeWitt was one of them. And as senior vice president and general manager of children’s media and education at PBS, she knows that extra screen time can have benefits.

“My kids are definitely raised on ‘Daniel Tiger,’” she said. “Now, they’re very into ‘Arthur.’ I was so grateful that we had that for them to watch when everybody was sent home. I was definitely practicing what we were trying to communicate to parents — that this is a trusted, safe place your kids can watch and they are actually going to learn something from it.”

DeWitt assumed her current role in September after first joining PBS in 1999. She went on to help support the creation and expansion of PBS Kids’ digital and online presence, including through games, apps and streaming video.
