Capitol Hill’s Santa Rosa Taqueria rises again, in a new location

About the business: Santa Rosa Taqueria in Capitol Hill is an authentic Mexican restaurant and happy-hour hangout from the Mendelsohn family’s Sunnyside Restaurant Group. The original Santa Rosa closed during the pandemic. “Santa Rosa 2.0,” as Micheline Mendelsohn calls it, opened earlier this month at 301 Pennsylvania Ave. SE, just a few doors down from the first iteration.

Brian Lacayo serves as the reborn restaurant’s consulting chef and Gina Chersevani of Buffalo & Bergen as its consulting mixologist on a revise beverage program featuring new takes on the classic margarita.

How it started: It was 2013 and celebrity chef Spike Mendelsohn, younger brother of Micheline, wanted to open a serious restaurant to show off his culinary chops and his love for French cooking. So Sunnyside, the group behind We, The Pizza and Good Stuff Eatery, opened Béarnaise at 315 Pennsylvania Ave. SE.

Fast forward four years. Micheline, the co-owner, was pregnant and Spike’s career was soaring.…
