D.C. taxis, ride-sharing services add fuel surcharges

Rising gas prices are increasing the cost for taxi rides as well as ride-sharing services in Greater Washington.

D.C.’s Department of For-Hire Vehicles said Wednesday it is immediately adding a $1 surcharge to taxi fares to help offset the high prices at the pump. The surcharge is in place for 120 days, uncles the director of the department decides to rescind it sooner.

The department said customers can expect to see the $1 charge added to the base fare when they hail a taxi on the street or when using an app.

Ride-sharing service Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE: UBER) said last week it was adding a surcharge of either 45 cents or 55 cents on each trip and either 35 cents or 45 cents on each Uber Eats order, depending on the location, to help reduce the burden on its drivers. The company said 100% of the surcharge money is going directly to its workers. Uber said the surcharge would remain in place for at least 60 days.
