Viewpoint: It’s time to curb the grievous patent trolls

American manufacturers are working to manage critical supply chain shortages and struggling through an economy being racked by the ups and downs of regional Covid-19 spikes. Despite these challenges, manufacturers have shown their resiliency, and the tens of millions of high-paying career opportunities that American manufacturers create and support — including tens of thousands of jobs in the Washington region — are critical to America’s post-pandemic economic recovery.

Manufacturers today find themselves under greater attack than at any point in a decade through the legal gamesmanship and weaponization of low-quality patents. Our patent system is supposed to promote invention and innovation, but right now, the system is being abused to shake down manufacturers for undeserved payoffs. This wastes resources better spent hiring more workers, expanding operations and investing in research and development.
