D.C. to drop proof of Covid vaccination requirement to enter businesses

The District is lifting a requirement that businesses in the city check patrons for proof of vaccination against Covid-19, starting Tuesday.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser said during a briefing Monday that the city is in “a much better place now” after weathering the surge of the Omicron variant.

Businesses may choose to keep the vaccine requirement in place in their own establishments.

The District is also letting its indoor mask requirement expire Feb. 28, so that starting March 1, they will no longer be required citywide. Again, businesses can choose to maintain the requirement.

Under the change, Bowser said masks will no longer be mandated inside restaurants, bars, sports arenas and entertainment venues, gyms and other businesses. However, masks will still be required in schools, libraries and on public transit.

The proof of vaccination requirement was announced in December and went into effect Jan. 15. At the time, Bowser said she didn’t want businesses to be “sleuths or detectives”…
