You Can Check Out Twitter Live Video on Apple TV, More Now (TWTR) (AAPL)

Looks like the early bird has indeed caught the Apple (ticker: AAPL): Twitter Inc ( TWTR) officially announced a new app for Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV ( AMZN) and Microsoft Corp.’s ( MSFT) XBox One.

This follows a report from The New York Times last month saying Apple and Twitter were in talks on the project for Apple TV.

The apps will be free and stream Twitter live videos, like 10 NFL Thursday Night Football games, MLB Advanced Media and Pac 12 Networks content and top tweets, according to the company. What’s more: You don’t even need a Twitter account or pay TV subscription to access this.

Only Apple TV users will be able to watch live premium video and have a side-by-side video experience when watching tweeted video clips.

This move is a critical one for the social network, at a time when all eyes are on the company as it grapples with abuse issues and lingering concerns about its ability to remain independent.

Live video will be a crucial element to the company’s status as a social networking giant in the months to come — or that #SaveTwitter hashtag could rear its influence yet again. As TechCrunch points out, an app of this kind could bring a whole new audience for the platform. One of Twitter‘s chief issues has been anemic user growth.

Twitter’s stock is down 22.1 percent on the year, though it was ticking up about 1.4 percent in Wednesday trading.

The free apps are available in select global markets beginning Wednesday.
