Oscar Rewrite: 1982

Best Picture: Gandhi       E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial

Best Director: Richard Attenborough (Gandhi)       Ridley Scott (Blade Runner)

Best Actor: Ben Kingsley (Gandhi)

Best Actress: Meryl Streep (Sophie’s Choice)

Best Supporting Actor: Louis Gossett Jr. (An Officer and A Gentleman) Sean Penn (Fast Times at Ridgemont High)

As good as Louis Gossett Jr. was in An Officer and a Gentleman, his performance now looks small compared to R. Lee Ermey’s drill instructor in Full Metal Jacket. Instead, it’s time to lift Sean Penn up where he belongs. Premiere Magazine voted his half-baked Jeff Spicoli the No. 9 Greatest Movie Character, a little too high in my opinion, but that’s exactly what Spicoli was: a little too high.

Best Supporting Actress: Jessica Lange (Tootsie)

Best Original Screenplay: Gandhi (John Briley)  Diner (Barry Levinson)

Best Adapted Screenplay: Missing (Costa-Gavras & Donald Stewart from a book by Thomas Hauser)       The Verdict (David Mamet from a book by Barry Reed)
