‘Operation Chill’ brings police, kids together

WASHINGTON – As the weather heats up this summer, a local police department has a weapon in its arsenal to help keep kids out of trouble. It’s called “Operation Chill.”

The deal is that Manassas City police will be on the lookout for minors who do good deeds. If an officer sees a kid helping someone – or helping to deter crime or helping out in their community – the officer will ticket them. But the ticket is good for a free Slurpee from 7-Eleven.

The program started in 1995. Since then, 7-Eleven has given away more than 12 million “Operation Chill” coupons.

The program has been popular with both kids and police. This year 7-Eleven is giving police across the country 1 million “Operation Chill” coupons, and 1,250 of those will be given out by Manassas City police.

“I think that’s a pretty good idea,” says Felicia Letellier, a slurpee enthusiast from Manassas City. “Anything to re-enforce the positive because there is too much negative.”
