Obama to make prime-time address in wake of California shootings

WASHINGTON — President Obama will address the nation Sunday night about the steps the federal government is taking to protect the nation, according to a statement from the White House.

The Oval Office address, scheduled for 8 p.m., will include an update on the investigation into the attack in San Bernardino, California. Obama is also expected to discuss the broader threat of terrorism, including the nature of the threat and how it has evolved.

According to the statement:

“(President Obama) will reiterate his firm conviction that ISIL will be destroyed and that the United States must draw upon our values – our unwavering commitment to justice, equality and freedom – to prevail over terrorist groups that use violence to advance a destructive ideology.”

On Wednesday, 14 people were killed and 21 people were wounded in a mass shooting at Inland Regional Center the Southern California town.

The FBI is investigating the the shooting as an act of terrorism. But the FBI wouldn’t say whether the husband-and-wife killers, Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik, were part of a larger terror plot or belonged to a terror cell, The Associated Press reports.

Farook and Malik were killed in a gun battle with police. The Islamic State group’s official radio station has aired a statement saying the shooting was carried out by two “supporters” of the extremist group, The Associated Press reports.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
