Woman dies after pedestrian-bus collision in Bethesda

WASHINGTON — A woman has died from her injuries after being hit by a Ride On bus in Bethesda Tuesday morning.

A 67-year-old woman was hit at about 8 a.m. at Old Georgetown Road and Battery Lane. Police say she was crossing Old Georgetown Road at Battery Lane when the bus, which was making a left from Battery Lane, struck her. She was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Devika Gunasekere, of Rockville, Maryland, succumbed to her injuries later in the evening.

Detectives are checking to see what the traffic signals were at the time of the collision.

The crash caused Old Georgetown Road to close in both directions until almost noon.

David Dise with Montgomery County’s Department of General Services says the Ride On bus involved in the crash was in service and did have passengers aboard at the time of the collision.

After the crash, the passengers were transferred to a different bus at the scene, Dise says. The four passengers on the bus were uninjured, and bus driver Kenneth Mullen, Jr., 44, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
