Man charged with assault in two-county chase

WASHINGTON — A Silver Spring man is facing charges for his involvement in a chase that started in Prince George’s County and ended in Montgomery County Thursday.

Montgomery County police say Floyd Wayne Thompson — a 30-year-old Silver Spring man — is charged with first-degree assault after engaging in a drug transaction and then allegedly threatening another driver with a gun during a chase around 4 p.m. Thursday.

Police say officers responded to the 11000 block of New Hampshire Avenue for the report of one vehicle chasing another vehicle with possible shots fired. Nearby, officers located the vehicles involved and took Thompson into custody.

Police say the occupants of both vehicles knew each other and had agreed to meet for a drug transaction that ended in a dispute.

After the drug exchange, police say Thompson began chasing the driver of the other vehicle, identified as 27-year-old Terrell Owens. During the chase, Thompson pointed a handgun at Owens when the cars stopped in traffic on New Hampshire Avenue.

At one point in the chase, Owens drove his car northbound in the southbound lanes of New Hampshire Avenue and struck three vehicles. He received traffic citations as a result. No one was hurt.

Thompson was transported to the Central Processing Unit and charged with one count of first-degree assault. Bond information for Thompson is not available at this time.

Detectives are asking anyone with information about the incident to call them at 240-773-6818.
